Ribeira da Cabrela (8.6 km)

Depart from the Roman Fountain of Armés to the north, through Rua da Fonte Romana, and cross the village of Armés to the north. Cross Ribeira de Armés and exit the road that connects Armés to Pero Pinheiro heading northwest by the right bank of the Ribeira. Enjoy the small but beautiful Cascade of Armés that the little river jumps.

Then, pass under the N9 road that connects Sintra to Pero Pinheiro, and you will arrive to the Casal Sequeiro road, which connects Cabrela to Pero Pinheiro. Go up this road by north and then northeast, and, at 38.8600, -9.3427, start going down to Ribeira da Cabrela by the old Roman road that passed there.

Cross Ribeira da Cabrela and go down by the left bank. It is a wonderful lost world, needing your protection. There you can find the European eel, the Squalius pyrenaicus, the Cobitis paludica, the boga-portuguesa, the Luciobarbus bocagei. Still a European otter! Don't disturb it, please.

At 38.8837, -9.3387 start to climb up the hillside to the west of the river. You will cross the abandoned village of Broas, abandoned since the 1970s. It would be connected to Almorquim, nearby, by a Roman road. Divided between the municipalities of Mafra and Sintra, it never benefited from the basic infrastructure that other villages saw. Its inhabitants, especially young people, ended up moving to other places. Today, no one lives there, although some owners still take care of their land. A saloia village, which you can explore carefully. The constructions were made from the limestone where the village is located, walls laboriously erected. Under the centennial ash tree in the center of the village, the inhabitants gathered and decided the problems of the community, already mentioned in the population census of 1527 as Aldea das Boroas, in the term Chilheiros. In 1834 the territorial delimitation between Mafra and Sintra divided it by the two municipalities. In 1950 it still had 25 inhabitants.

Then head southwest and continue uphill, and when you reach the top of the valley, head west to the Archaeological Museum of São Miguel de Odrinhas. Ribeira da Cabrela (8,6 km)

Parta da Fonte romana de Armés para norte, pela Rua da Fonte Romana, e atravesse a povoação de Armés para norte. Atravesse a Ribeira de Armés e saia da estrada que liga Armés a Pero Pinheiro seguindo para noroeste pela margem direita da Ribeira. Aprecie a pequena mas bela Cascata de Armés que a ribeira salta.

Passe depois sob a estrada N9 que liga Sintra a Pero Pinheiro, e irá ter à Estrada do Casal Sequeiro, que liga Cabrela a Pero Pinheiro. Suba esta estrada no sentido norte e depois nordeste, e, em 38.8600, -9.3427, comece a descer para a Ribeira da Cabrela pela antiga estrada romana que ali passava.

Atravesse a Ribeira da Cabrela e desça agora pela sua margem esquerda. É um maravilhoso mundo perdido, necessitando da sua proteção. Ali pode encontrar a enguia-europeia, o escalo do sul, a verdemã-comum, a boga-portuguesa, o barbo comum ibérico. Ainda uma lontra-europeia! Não a incomodem, por favor.

Em 38.8837, -9.3387 comece a subir a encosta a poente da Ribeira. Atravessará a aldeia de Broas, abandonada desde os anos de 1970. Estaria ligada a Almorquim, ali próximo, por uma estrada romana. Dividida entre os concelhos de Mafra e Sintra, nunca beneficiou das infraestruturas básicas que outras aldeias viram surgir. Os seus habitantes, sobretudo os jovens, acabaram por se mudar para outros locais. Hoje, ninguém lá mora, embora alguns proprietários cuidem ainda dos seus terrenos. Uma aldeia saloia, que poderá explorar cuidadosamente. As construções foram feitas a partir da pedra calcária onde a aldeia se situa, paredes laboriosamente erguidas. Sob o freixo centenário no centro da aldeia, os habitantes reuniam e decidiam os problemas da comunidade, já referida no censo populacional de 1527 como Aldea das Boroas, no termo de Chilheiros. Em 1834 a delimitação territorial entre Mafra e Sintra dividiu-a pelos dois concelhos. Em 1950 tinha ainda 25 habitantes.

Siga depois para sudoeste continuando a subir a encosta, e, quando chegar ao cimo do vale, siga para poente até ao Museu Arqueológico de São Miguel de Odrinhas.
