Galamares - São Mamede de Janas (6.0 km)

Depart from the bridge over the Ribeira de Colares, near Galamares, on the N247 road that connects Sintra to Colares, on a path that starts at the west end of the bridge and goes northeast. You will have the road to Madre de Deus. Then head northwest, on the road, and, in Carrascal, when the road starts to turn north, then take the northwest by Azinhaga do Calhau. And then, always to northwest, the Caminho da Igreja, then Rua do Serrano, passing the road that crosses Morelinho.

Leave Morelinho to the northwest, along Rua da Fonte, until you reach Estrada de Janas. Nearby are the ruins of Casal da Torre. Mestre Henriques, a major physicist of the kingdom at the time of the king D. Duarte, built a small chapel, of which there are here some ruins, and later left this Casal in a testament, in 1449, to the Ordem do Carmo, to establish a convent of the Order. The place soon proved to be inhospitable, both due to the sterility of the land and the lack of neighbors, totally unprotected from the winds. A few years later, in 1457, a land was donated in Boca da Mata, near Colares, where the Santa Ana do Carmo Convent was built.

Then follow from Estrada de Janas, at 38.8260, -9.4220, to the north, and then to the west, until you reach the Chapel of São Mamede de Janas. Here is the end of the route.

And it is here in this chapel that, between the 15th and the 17th of August, there is a curious pilgrimage of rural inclination, which consists of driving cattle around the temple. Tradition requires that three ritual turns are performed counterclockwise, and often their owners deposit ex-votos inside, accompanied by offerings such as wheat, barley or olive oil (the animals, in turn, receive ribbons colors they keep throughout the year).

Galamares - São Mamede de Janas (6,0 km)

Parta da ponte sobre a Ribeira de Colares, perto de Galamares, na estrada N247 que liga Sintra a Colares, num caminho que se inicia no extremo poente da ponte e segue para nordeste. Irá ter à Estrada da Madre de Deus. Siga então para noroeste, pela estrada, até, no Carrascal, quando a estrada começa a virar para norte, tomar então, para noroeste, a Azinhaga do Calhau. E depois, sempre para noroeste, o Caminho da Igreja, depois a Rua do Serrano, passando a estrada que atravessa Morelinho.

Saia de Morelinho para noroeste, pela Rua da Fonte, até chegar à Estrada de Janas. Ali perto estão as ruínas do Casal da Torre. Mestre Henriques, físico mor do reino à época de D. Duarte, ergueu aqui uma capelinha de que restam umas ruínas e deixou depois este casal em testamento, em 1449, à Ordem do Carmo, para nele se fundar um convento da Ordem. O lugar em breve se mostrou inóspito, tanto pela esterilidade da terra como pela falta de vizinhos, totalmente desabrigado dos ventos. Poucos anos depois, em 1457, foi doado um terreno na Boca da Mata, próximo de Colares, onde acabou por se erguer o Convento de Santa Ana do Carmo.

Siga depois a partir da Estrada de Janas, em 38.8260, -9.4220, para norte, e depois para poente, até chegar à Capela de São Mamede de Janas. É aqui o final do percurso.

E é aqui nesta capela que, entre 15 e 17 de Agosto, se realiza uma curiosa romaria de pendor rural, que consiste na condução de gado em volta do templo. A tradição impõe que se façam três voltas rituais no sentido contrário ao dos ponteiros do relógio e, muitas vezes, os seus donos depositam ex-votos no interior, acompanhados de ofertas como trigo, cevada ou azeite (recebendo os animais, em troca, fitas de cores que conservam durante o ano).
